NHRA AZ Nationals 2023
Rumored to be the final NHRA event at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Complex, the second race of the 2023 NHRA season was one for the record books. With the track’s closure looming in the distance, NHRA made this year’s AZ Nationals a race to remember kicking off a new “#2Fast2Tasty” challenge. The special event hosts semifinalists for a rematch with a bonus purse and points in the Countdown to the Championship on the line.
Top Fuel
In the Top Fuel category, WELD Racing’s newest partners at Kalitta Racing dominated the field, where Doug Kalitta took home a win in the #2Fast2Tasty challenge with a winning run of 3.868 at 294.82 mph. Shawn Langdon worked his way to the finals with a run of 3.719, and while Justin Ashley ultimately took the win over Langdon in the final round, the team’s improved performance from last season proves they are a force to be reckoned with.
Funny Car
WELD Racing’s Funny Car Class driver Robert Hight overcame a rough start at the Arizona Nationals, with a best run of 4.218 seconds in qualifying placing him 9th. However, with the help of his crew chief and team, Hight fought his way through the competition and eventually faced off against fellow WELD driver and reigning world champion, Ron Capps, in the final round. Hight secured the win with a 3.930-second elapsed time at 328.62 mph, marking his 62nd national event win and his third historic final Funny Car win at Wild Horse.
